Battens, strengthening.-Trunks, portmanteaux, boxes, &c. are furnished with strengthening-battens c fitted along their longitudinal edges, which are bevelled to receive the battens. The normal shape of the trunk &c. is thereby preserved, while the fitting of the usual crossbattens d may be as usual. The battens c are bent over and secured to the ends of the trunk &c., as shown.
