Steps; ingress and egress of passengers, controlling.-A double-deck tramcar is provided with a central dropped platform having movable barriers which are arranged to divide it into separate exit and entrance passageways leading to and from the " near " side, the " off side remaining closed. Two stairways E, F communicate with the upper deck. The lower deck is divided into two compartments, and small platforms are left for the driver at each end. The upper deck extends over these platforms, and the ends may be left open or enclosed like the rest of the upper deck. The central platform is provided with a step d<1> and two stanchions d<2>, d<3> at each side, and with fixed barriers d<4> opposite the entrances to the compartments. Gates d<7>, d<8> are pivoted to the stanchions d', d3 and are adapted to close the entrance to the platform or in conjunction with the barriers d<4> form separate entrance and exit passageways on the platform. Light barriers o are so mounted on the stanchions d<2>, d<3> that they can be turned across the passageways by the conductor when he signals the driver to proceed, or automatically when the car is in motion in order to deter passengers from entering the car. The barriers o are elastically connected by means of coil springs to sleeves o<1>, Fig. 6, carrying pulleys o<2> which are connected by cords to a spring o<9> adapted to hold the barriers in their non-obstructing position. A cord o<4> connects the pulleys to the conductor's signal so that the barriers are turned when the signal to proceed is given. When the car is in motion, a generator o<7> energizes a solenoid o<6> which acts through a lever o<5> and automatically turns the barriers into an obstructing position, if not already turned, and holds them in that position until the car has almost stopped. A semaphore device adapted to cover and uncover warning words is also described in terms identical with those in Specification 2808/12.
