Abstract

1056. Mayer, F. Jan. 13. Carriage-shift mechanism.-The carriage is provided with a single or multiple shift and is locked in the elevated position on depression of the shift-key by stop mechanism, which directly supports the carriage in the shift position, but is released just before the typebar reaches the platen. When a single shift only is used, the rail s, Fig. 6, on which the carriage runs is provided with a projection a adapted, when the carriage is elevated, to engage with a spring-held stop-bar b. When any typebar is struck, the universal bar c is actuated and displaces the stop-bar b just before the type strikes the platen. When a double shift is used, it is necessary to provide means to prevent the carriage from engaging in the intermediate position on its descent from the upper position. In the form shown in Fig. 5, this is done by placing the notches d, f adapted to hold the carriage in the upper and intermediate positions respectively, on separate stop-bars b<1>, b, and providing a projection e, on the stop-bar b to hold its notch f out of the way of the descending carriage. In the modification shown in Fig. 8, the projection e is placed between the two notches which are arranged on one stopbar. In order to put the stop-bar or bars out of action when typing small letters only, the projection a is adapted to hold the stop-bar or bars out of reach of the universal bar.
