Abstract

821. Armstrong, J. Jan. 10. Washers; washing processes; tar. -In a process of cleaning gases from liquid or solid matters, the gases are strongly compressed and forced through jets or nozzles f and tubes e' submerged in cleansing-liquid in compartments a of a vessel b. By this means, a vigorous agitation and intimate admixture of the gas and liquid takes place. The tubes e<1> may be rifled or twisted internally to assist the washing action, and reciprocating needles or prickers, operated by levers passing through tubes x, serve to clean the jets f. Several vessels dealing with the same gas may be joined up in series by pipes leading from one to the other. Tar may be employed for the removal of tar from gases, acid for ammonia, oil for benzol and light hydrocarbons, or water or other cheap liquid for solids. In the extraction of tar, hot foul gas is passed through tar in the apparatus which may be heated to prevent condensation of the ammonia.
