461. Ommundsen, H. Jan. 5. Scoring and marking apparatus.-Relates to a scoring-device, mainly intended for use in the game of ' bridge,' and of the type which indicates the algebraic sum of the scores. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a chain C, passing round rollers C<1> beneath a plate A, is fitted with two projecting pins C<2>, C<3> adapted to engage pointers D<1> which slide in slots A<1>, A<2> and are attached to springs tending to draw them downwards to the zero of a central scale B, B'. Two other pointers E, L<1> slide in the slots A<1>, A<2> and are constructed so as to grip the chain C when they are seized by finger and thumb to move them up the scale. To register a score, the appropriate pointer E or E<1> is gripped and moved up to the required number. This action moves the chain C by an equal amount, and hence also the pointer D' which is not at zero, thus adding or subtracting the score according to whether the pointer E, E<1>, which is moved, is in the same slot as the pointer D<1> or not. The difference between the scores is thus indicated, and also, finally, which of the players has won. The points in each game are scored on slides F<6>, F<7>. The end of a game is indicated by one of the slides F<6>, F<7> striking one of two auxiliary slides G<2>, G<3> and exposing a number G<1>. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5, a numbered disk L' is fixed to a spindle L<1> to which a knob L<2> and a spring M<2> having sharp points M<1> are also fixed. Loose on the spindle L<1> is a numbered disk L upon which a spring 0 presses. To register a score, the knob L<2> is pressed down, so as to allow the points M' to rise and engage the loose disk L, and turned till the desired number on the disk L<3> is against the appropriate arrow P, P<1>. The score appears at one of the openings A<3>, A<4>. The knob L<3> is then allowed to rise so as to disengage the points M<1>, and on being released entirely, the disk L<3> is brought back to zero by a spring L<4> acting on an arm L<5> fast on the spindle L<1>.
