Abstract

29,273. Fairweather, W., [Thomas, A. L.]. Dec. 29. Making metal fabrics; coiling; expanding and stretching; bending-formers.-In a machine for bending wire, particularly for making garmentstays either formed of a single wire or of a number of wires, as shown in Fig. 7, the wire is coiled alternately on two pins to form figureeight coils, being carried by a shuttle operated by a pair of rotary drivers. The guide slots 5 for the shuttles are formed between a gapped frame 3 and a pair of plates 6 which are mounted on shafts 7. The coiling-pins 13 are L-shaped and are secured by clamps 13<a> to deflecting-plates 14, which are fixed in position on the plates 6 by screws and slots 14<b>, 14<a> and are adjusted to suit the width of fabric by screws 14<c>. The wires are prevented from swinging outwards by guide-plates 44 carried by bars 45 and having bent lips 46 for facilitating the admission of the wires. The shuttles 16 consist of bars 17, 18, Fig. 5, connected by bolts 19 on which are mounted antifriction rollers 21 which run in the guide slots 5. The bar 18 carries a frame 23 on which is mounted a bobbin 27 held therein by a spring pin 32. The wire 35 passes through a tube 26, is wrapped round a wheel 36, which has friction disks 38 at each side and an adjusting-nut 40 on the spindle 37 to regulate the tension, and passes between grooved rollers 41. The stud part 24 of the frame 23 has a friction roller 22 which is engaged by one of the notched arms 48 of one of a pair of rotary plates 47, which are mounted on the hubs of a pair of gear-wheels 52 rotated from the main shaft 57 by gears 55, 56. As the fabric is forced off the pins, the loops are bent at right-angles by a series of pairs of crushing-rolls 62, 63, 64 driven by bevel-gear from a shaft 79 rotated by chain gear from the shaft 57. The rolls 63, 64 are conical so that the fabric is flattened at each edge in turn. The fabric is then stretched by a pair of rollers 84 intermittently operated by a ratchet-wheel 87 rotated by a pivoted pawl plate 88 carrying a series of spring-pressed pawls having a slightly different spacing from the ratchet teeth, to prevent lost motion. The plate 88 is pivoted on the spindle of the roller 84 and is operated by an eccentric on the shaft 57 through a rod, link, and lever 91, which is pivoted to the plate and the motion of which is limited in one direction by a projection 93 thereon and in the other direction by a screw stop 94. Specification 17,747/12 is referred to.
