Abstract
28,609. S÷derlund, O. Dec. 19. Ammonia, distilling; acids, distilling; spray evaporators; film evaporators. - In separating gases or volatile substances, such as ammonia and acetic acid, from dilute solutions, for example, the filter-press liquor obtained in wetcarbonizing peat, by means of a current of air or other gas circulating through a still and an absorber, precautions are taken to avoid removal of the vapour of water or other solvent from the circulating gas current, thus avoiding the loss of heat which would otherwise be necessary for the vaporization of the water &c. in the still. In particular, the temperature and the concentration of the absorbent are carefully controlled. The liquor is pre-heated by the effluent escaping from the still, and steam may be admitted to compensate for radiation losses. The liquor may be treated in bulk, film, or spray form. The absorbent may also be sprayed. The liquid may be passed through two spray evaporators in series, the gas current passing in the reverse direction. A film apparatus consists of superposed shelves or trays, over which the liquid, which is circulated by a pump, passes downwards in a zigzag path, the gas passing upwards.
