Abstract
28,404. Helbig, D. Dec. 17, 1910, [Convention date]. Oxygen is produced by the interaction of persulphates, particularly of potassium and sodium, and oxides or peroxides, particularly of the alkali and alkaline-earth metals, or hydrates thereof, and oxides and peroxides of many metals, such as lead, manganese, silver, &c. To the reaction mass may be added inert admixtures, for instance kieselguhr or an excess of one of the reacting substances, such as caustic lime, or active admixtures which give off oxygen under the high temperature generated by the primary reaction, for example alkali chlorates, perchlorates, permanganates, and bichromates. The dry mixtures may be kept unchanged indefinitely, packed, for instance in suitable cartridges &c. The reaction is started by contact with a suitable liquid, such as water, or by heating the mixture or a portion thereof, as by a burning match. In some cases, dropping on a little water is sufficient to start the reaction, which is then propagated through the mass. Examples of mixtures are: potassium persulphate and calcium oxide or sodium peroxide, or, for a quiet reaction, potassium persulphate, kieselguhr, sodium peroxide, and calcium oxide, or potassium persulphate, burnt lime, potassium chlorate, and pyrolusite.
