Designs on face, producing.-In machinery for producing designs on fabrics, comprising a revolving shearing-roller, a bed or support, and a stationary or movable stencil of hard flexible material inserted between the cutter and the bed, the stencil is passed round rollers having axes parallel to the bed, and so situated that the line joining the points where the stencil leaves one roller, and passes' on to the other, lies below the edge of the bed. The spiral cutter a is mounted as usual in pivoted end frames d provided with handles f for lifting out of operative position. The cloth g passes over a bed h beneath a zinc, stiff paper, or like stencil plate m, which passes on to rollers n, n<1> set below the bed and provided with tensioning-ratchets n and with adjusting-screws q. A brush l is provided to raise the nap. A greater depth of shearing may be secured by placing a layer of rubber or felt u over the bed h, a sheet of paper being interposed below the fabric to reduce friction. An endless stencil may be led over a third roller n<2> and the stencil may then be drawn beneath the cutter at the same speed as the fabric, or at a different speed. The arrangement may be duplicated by the use of two machines with complementary designs on the stencils. In case of the endless sheets, one of the side frames carrying the roller bearings may be hinged or on a slide, and the corresponding lever d made removable to allow of replacement of the sheet. Or the rollers may be moved endways on their bearings, or the ends may be thinned down and riveted, in which case a fresh sheet may be inserted by removing the rivets.
