Abstract
28,075. Harger, J. Dec. 13. Fires, preventing in mines and ships; fireextinguishing by gases.-Explosions or fires in mines, ships, &c. are prevented by lowering the oxygen content of the air supplied for ventilation purposes to such an extent that while it will be insufficient to allow the combustion of ordinary solid or liquid combustibles it will still support human life. This is effected by removing a portion of the oxygen by any wellknown means or by adding to the air any inert non-poisonous gas rich in nitrogen, such as purified flue gases free from carbon-monoxide. The modified air is tested for oxygen by passing it over a series of lamps supplied with various hydrocarbons or other burning material which are found to be extinguished at varying percentages of oxygen; such a series may begin with a lamp of one of the higher hydrocarbons and end with acetylene gas.
