Abstract

26,845. Coates, L. R. Nov. 30. Calcium phosphate.-A mixture of natural calcium phosphate and lime or calcium carbonate, or a natural calcium phosphate containing calcium carbonate, is calcined at a temperature and under such conditions that the lime is converted into readily slakable form and the product is slaked and neutralized, a fertilizer being obtained which contains insoluble calcium phosphate in a very finely-divided available form. The slaking may be done with water containing sufficient acid to neutralize the free lime, or acid may be added for this purpose after slaking. Sulphuric acid, yielding calcium sulphate, is specially suitable, but nitric, nitrous, sulphurous, and phosphoric acid are also mentioned, the resulting salts having a fertilizing value. The product may be graded by sifting and used with other fertilizing- materials such as blood, tankage, &c. It may be used as a basis for bacterial fertilizers, potassium sulphate and nitrogen-free organic material, such as tartrate and sugar, being sometimes mixed with it when it is used in this way.
