Dental seats; seat adjustments.-The back of a dental chair is adjustable by means of a clutch which can be used as a friction or positive grip as desired. Fig. 1 shows a chair in which the back 9 is carried by a support 11 pivoted to a bracket 13 and angularly adjustable by a rod 10 passing through a clutch 12 shown in detail in Figs. 2 and 3. The friction grip consists of a wedge 20 which may be released by depressing the end 24 of a spring-pressed lever 18 pivoted at 26 and engaging a pin 19 projecting from the wedge 20. The positive clutch mechanism consists of a spring-pressed pin 23 adapted to engage holes 14 on the bar 10. The head of the pin 23 is embraced by a camshaped fork 22 forming a part of the lever 18. When the handle 24 is depressed, the pin 23 is disengaged from the bar 10. The pin 23 may be held permanently out of engagement with the bar 10, so that the wedge 20 alone is operative, by withdrawing and then rotating the pin 23, projecting pins 25 on the pin 23 engaging in recesses (not shown) in the sleeve 27.
