Abstract

25,282. Cabanis, G. C. Nov. 17, 1910, [Convention date]. Cupping; punching; shearing; angular bending.-Wire gauze articles having an edging, such as beekeepers' masks, dish covers, sieves &c. are made by (1) placing a sheet of gauze between formers, closing the formers on it, (2) shearing the edge, (3) placing the U- shaped ring shown in Fig. 17 on the edge, and making a groove or corrugation in the ring thereby to fasten it to the gauze. (1) A female die 26, Fig. 1, is made with feet 25 supported by arms 24 attached to a socket 22 capable of rotating on a shaft 2, which is itself only capable of longitudinal motion. A male die is supported by the shaft 1, and when starting an operation the two dies are moved downwards by pulling a cable 30 until a collar 21 engages a socket 19 and a collar 7 engages a spring 9. A pressure screw 158 is then tightened and the wire-gauze placed between the dies. A second cable is pulled to raise the lower die and perform the shaping operation, a pressure stud attached to the centre of the upper die penetrating the wire-gauze. Thereupon the pressure screw 158 is loosened and the second cable pulled to raise the dies further until the collars 4, 8 engage. (2) A hand-operated punch mounted on the box 2 may be employed for starting the shearing operation. Rotary shears 35, 36 are mounted on parallel shafts. and by means of hand-levers 62, 59 are moved towards one another into position to be driven by hand operated gearing 48, 40. A hand-lever 76 and eccentric 75 serve to move forward one of the shafts of the rotary shears to bring the shears into operative position. A leather collar or disk 67 serves to grip and rotate the work. To enable other than circular articles to be made, the dies may have various shapes and may be mounted on ball castors moving on a table. To obviate the necessity for punching a hole in the gauze the shearing may be started at the extreme edge and continued along a spiral till the proper position is attained. (3) The ring shown in Fig. 17 having been placed on the edge of the gauze and kept horizontal by a forked holder, rolls 117, 118 are brought into operative position in the same way as the rotary shears and crimp or corrugate the ring to fasten it in position.
