Abstract
25,153. Malibran, A. de. Nov. 11. Driving; feed-motions. - Relates to disk phonographs and like machines of the type having radial screw-feed mechanism which supports the acoustic system, and consists in mounting the screw shaft so that it is rotatable about a vertical shaft; in providing a friction wheel driven by the record disk and adjustable along the screw shaft so that the rate of feed may be varied or reversed ; in providing a shouldered collar upon which the acoustic system is supported when raised from the record; and in so arranging the acoustic system as substantially to balance it about the point of support. Fig. 1 shows the general arrangement of the machine, and Fig. 3 the tone-arm mounting. The feedscrew 1, by means of which the whole acoustic system is traversed across the record-disk 3 upon a guide-bar 11, is carried within a tube 2, and is fitted with a friction-wheel 5 driven from the disk, and adjustable along the shaft 4 to vary the speed or direction of the drive. The frame 2, 9, 11, 10 is adjustably mounted on a slotted upright 12, lugs 15 on which engage a trunnion 18, which is itself rotatable on a shaft in the pillar 20. An adjustable coil spring on the trunnion 18 maintains the pressure of the wheel 5 on the disk. A tail-piece 25 on the support 12 normally rests within a notch on a collar of the pillar 20, but when the soundbox is removed from the disk, this part rests against the piece 23, which holds it up. The apparatus is set up by means of a cap 29 which fits over the turntable spindle 7, and is provided with a pin 30 to engage a hole in the driving- spindle 4. When it is so placed, the screw 28 is tightened to secure the whole in position on a dovetail bar.27. The carriage 31 is arranged to slide on the slotted tube 1, and is provided with a cam-lever 33 by which the feed-nut may be lifted. The acoustic system is so arranged that its centre of gravity is close to the carriage 31.
