Abstract
24,588. Laserson, F. M. Nov. 6. Burning, perforating by; perforating-appliances.-Consists of a hand-tool for burning perforations in paper, cloth, &c. for use as a clothing stencil or a design for embroidery. The perforator consists preferably of a wheel a, Fig. 3, the teeth a' of which are heated by a Bunsen burner inserted within the handle b of the instrument. A packing of asbestos j and a metal guard k serve to isolate the handle b from the heat of the wheel a. The wheel a may he replaced by wheels having teeth of different sizes. The gas may be supplied to the nipple o by flexible tubing so that the instrument is free to be moved in all directions. An extension of the guard k serves to protect the work from the flame, and the wheel may be provided with lateral guards of sheet metal or wire gauze for the same purpose. An additional handle may be provided in the vicinity of the wheel to facilitate the guiding of the instrument over sharp curves, or there may be a swivelled connexion between the wheel and the handle of the instrument for the same purpose. The wheel may be heated on each side by branch jets from the carrier, and flanges may be formed on the wheel to shield the paper from the flame. Various modifications are described in which the wheel is enclosed almost wholly on one or both sides as a protection against fire. In a modification, the wheel may be hollow and internally heated, perforations being provided therein to allow for the escape of the products of combustion. Fig. 16 shows a modification in which the wheel a is heated by the combustion of spirit, such as benzine, introduced at the top of the handle b after the removal of the cap b<5>. The spirit passes by way of cotton wick x and a perforated plate c to the burning-nozzle y. A valve b<6> serves to relieve the pressure. Modifications are described in which the rotary perforator is made in two parts and is heated internally by electrically heated wires coiled around a ring of mica, quartz, or compressed asbestos. The electric current may be controlled from a switch carried by the tool handle or otherwise. The perforator may consist of a spring-controlled needle b<14>, Fig. 14, vertically reciprocated by the engagement with a lug b<10> thereon of an oscillating armature b<9> of a magnet b<11>, which is energized intermittently through a make-and-break device consisting ofa spring-depressed plunger z<5> adapted to be raised to effect a contact by projections on a ball z<3>. The needle may be heated electrically or by gas or spirit.
