Flat ropes; straps and bands.-Lifting - slings of wire rope &c. are made flat where they bear against the body to be lifted by laying out and securing by lacing, stitching, riveting, &c., the cable elements of the rope or the strands of the cables, side by side, according to the width required, additional strands being employed, if desired. Figs. 2 and 3 show such a sling B flattened at A, in which the rope elements C are laid out and secured by wires D. A rope is exemplified which consists of seven cables laid up six over one, each cable consisting of four strands comprising seven wires. The wires in two strands are laid to the right, and in the other two strands to the left; the cables are similarly laid three to the right and three to the left, over the central cable, which is laid either to the right or to the left. Additional strands, when used, are spliced or otherwise secured to the unflattened parts of the rope. The parts B of the rope are shown short in Fig. 2, but may be'long enough to constitute the whole of the hauling-rope.
