Abstract

23,457. Marks, E. C. R., [Downing, H. W.]. Oct. 24 Riding and haress saddles; girths; stirrupstrap suspenders; materials.-Saddles, particularly for race-horses, are made of moulded green hide stretched in layers over a tree of compressed fibre, leather, or thin wood. Green hide 1 is soaked in water and shaped upon a block or mould to correspond with the undersurface or interior of a saddle. The tree 5, 6, Figs. 2 and 3, is then placed upon the hide on the block, and the edge of the hide is turned up around the tree and secured by tacking or sewing. An upper layer 4, Fig. 5, is then secured by turning its edge beneath the tree, and the edges of both layers are secured by sewing through the body of the tree and around the head 6. Fig. 2 shows a steel &c. plate 8 employed to strengthen the fibre &c. head 6 of the tree. In the case of heavy saddles, the plate 8 is secured to the tree by plates 11 fixed to the plates 8 by riveting and brazing. Fig. 10 shows part of a saddle made with hide layers 1, 4, in which a thin wood tree 5 is provided with a sewn-on covering 16 of green hide to prevent splitting. The girth-straps 20, 21 are stitched to the tree and green hide, and the attachments 18 for the stirrup straps are secured to the plate 8, Fig. 2, being made to project forwardly from the plate if the rider wishes to ride in a forward position. Fig. 9 shows a harness saddle, in which a channelled strip 26 of fibre &c. is placed between layers 25, 28 of green hide. The layers are secured together by stitching and rivets 30, side strips 27 of hide being interposed
