[Addition to 1994/09.] Lift cages, locking and unlocking.-Relates to safety mechanism for lifts in which a movable pulley 5 is actuated by mechanical means to cause gripping of the handing-rope when the door is open, and consists in providing fluidpressure apparatus to actuate the pulley 5. The pulley 5 is mounted on a weighted ram B at the bottom of the well. The cylinder C communicates by the pipe f with the pressuresupply pipe or exhaust pipe e through a valve. The control rope 6, which is weighted at one end, passes over pulleys G, I, L down through the tube 12 of the mechanical device in the gate, and is attached to the stop M. A cam K is formed in one with the pulley I, and a weighted lever P actuating the control valve of the cylinder C bears at one end against the cam. The control rope 1 is attached to the cage at S, and after passing around pulleys 5, T, U and sprocket V of the gripping-device described in Specification 24,534/07 is attached to the weight W. When the gate is opened, the cam K moves so that the roller at the end of the lever P moves into the depression in the cam, and opens the cylinder C to exhaust. The movement of the pulley 5 causes the grip 18 to lock the handing-rope. On closing the gate, the cam is moved in the opposite direction and fluid pressure is admitted to the cylinder, moving the pulley 5 upward and releasing the grip.
