[Cognate Application, 22,860/11.] Pile tables and supports for sheet feeds.-In sheet-feeding mechanism for printing, folding, and like machines in which, while one pile is being fed, a second pile may be stacked beneath the first pile in order to provide a practically continuous feed, the pile-lifting brackets are constructed and arranged so as to be movable up and down vertical supports, and are also adapted to be turned laterally to enable them to clear the second pile when lowered to engage it. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the brackets comprise laterally-movable arms c hinged to pinions c<1> slidably mounted upon vertical supports a. The brackets are raised and lowered by means of chains f passing over chain-wheels e driven by gearing k<2>, k<1>, a worm-wheel q, and a worm h, which may be rotated by hand by means of a chain k for rapidly raising or lowering the pile, or automatically by a ratchet and pawl j<1>, j<2> driven from the machine by a cam r and levers q, j<3>. In a modification shown in Fig. 3, the chains f are endless and the brackets are raiced and lowered by means of pinions e<1> mounted on a shaft n carried by the brackets, and engaging the chains. The shaft n is rotated through a clutch n<1> by means of a worm-wheel n<2> and worm o<1 >slidably mounted upon a shaft o which is rotated by a ratchet arrangement similar to that in Fig. 1. To enable sheets of different sizes or thicknesses to be fed simultaneously from two piles, each bracket is provided with an independent raising-mechanism, and the arms o of the brackets are formed rigid with the pinions c<1> and are provided with lateral arms to support the piles, the arms being pivoted to allow them to be turned so as to lie along the arms c to clear the secondary piles during descent. In further modifications: (1) the brackets comprise rigid arms capable of sliding and turning about their supports, which may be in the form of screws, racks, or plain rods; (2) the bracket is slidahly keyed to a rotatable support.
