Abstract

20,012. Marino, P. Sept. 8. Silvering.-Consists in silvering articles of cast iron, wood, plaster, paper, papier mÔchÚ, or other porous materials by the following process before electro-plating. Two or more coatings of solutions of an alkaline silicate are applied by brushing or dipping; the second solution may be stronger than the first. The articles thus rendered impermeable to liquid are brushed in succession with a strong solution of potassium cyanide and ammonium fluoride containing dissolved silver chloride, and with a solution of hydrazine sulphate and sodium hydrate or carbonate. The application of the silver and reducing solutions is repeated, and the articles are treated with a rapidlyrotating brush having bristles of brass, zinc, copper, tin, aluminium, or iron.
