Abstract

19,858. Everard, F. T. M., and Severus, F. Sept. 6. Purifying saccharine liquids; refining sugar.- In a process for obtaining first-product sugar and final molasses, the juice is treated with sulphurous acid, lime, and carbon dioxide, and is concentrated to a syrup, and treated with sulphurous acid and sodium hydrosulphite. The molasses from the centrifugals of 68 per cent. purity is returned to the syrup to be sulphited, while the molasses of 50-55 per cent purity is treated with sulphurous acid and sodium hydrosulphite and boiled with massecuite formed from the mixture of first molasses and syrup. The second sugar so obtained is mixed with the mixture of first molasses and syrup and pumped into a crystalliser, from which all the pans are started, being boiled off with the mixture of first molasses and syrup.
