Abstract

18,920. Alexander, A. E., [Anderson Winding Machine Co.]. Dec. 6, 1910. Winding-machines.-Spindles or mandrels for winding coils, particularly coils for electro-magnets and the fields of dynamos and motors, are formed with grooves running parallel to the direction of rotation and offset from each other lengthways of the mandrel ; the invention is particularly applicable to the collapsible mandrels described in Specification 18,919/11. The guide may consist of a number of curved plates 121, Fig. 1, adapted to be laid on the mandrel for making around winding. The grooves in the plates c, d being offset by half a groove from those on the plates a, b. In a modification, the grooves are joined together by inclined grooves 125, Fig. 2. With a mandrel for forming polysided coils, the angles only need be provided with grooves, which are preferably formed on pins 127, Fig. 7, fitting into longitudinal recesses. The pins maybe secured in position by devices entering recesses in the ends of the filler-blocks 92 and pins 127, or by flat strips of metal entering longitudinal grooves in the blocks and pins and set at right-angles to each other. In a modification, projections 106<a> are secured to the mandrel flush against the end plate 100<a> and having a depth equal to'the diameter of the wire and a thickness equal to half this diameter. The first turn of wire acts as a guide for the succeeding turns. Instead of using a rigid guide as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, thick paper wrapped round the shell of a coil may be used. Specification 28,330/10 is also referred to.
