Abstract

18,311. Reymond, M. Aug. 25, 1910, [Convention date]. Paddle - wheels; driving - arrangements for paddle-wheels.-A rotary propeller for use in air or water is adapted to make half a revolution about its own axis while that axis performs a complete revolution about a main shaft. The inclination of the blade with respect to the machine may be adjusted by turning it about its axis or by varying the inclination of the blade axis with respect to the main shaft. The blade a is fixed to the axis a<2>, which can rotate in a bearing b<1> carried by arms b, of which one is hinged and the other curved and in two parts b<3>, b<4>, connected by a bolt b<2>. Adjustment of the two parts b<3>, b<4> by means of the bolt b<2> enables the inclination of the axis a<2> to be varied. The main shaft c carries pinions f<2> normally fixed but adjustable through a worm and worm-wheel g when the inclination of the blade is to be altered. Pinions h carried by the arms b gear with the pinions f<2> and with pinions on the axis a<2>. As the shaft c rotates, the pinions h roll on the pinions f<2>, and they are chosen so that the rotation transmitted to the shaft a<2> is such that opposite faces of the blade strike the fluid in each successive revolution of the shaft c. Various positions taken up by the blade are shown in Fig. 4. If desired, elliptical gear-wheels may be used so that the blades rotate at a variable speed. Several fans may be mounted on the same support carried by the main shaft. The fan blades are S-shaped in cross-section and symmetrical about their axes. They may be solid or hollow, and made of wood, metal, &c., or of sheets of rigid or flexible material.
