Inking - apparatus; printing - surfaces. - Printers' rollers, such as inking or like rollers of typographic and lithographic presses, are cleaned without contact with scrapers, by being laid on helically or otherwise annularly grooved and longitudinally reciprocated rollers 17, 18 running in cleansing-fluid, after which they may be dried by contact with two plain rotating rollers 30, 31, the roller 31 being covered with composition and having a scraper 32 to remove all liquid. As shown, the rollers 17, 18 have right and left handed helical grooves which run to the middle portion and cause the matter removed from the inking or like roller to be carried to the centre of the trough 13, where the discharge orifice is preferably situated. The grooves are made sufficiently narrow to leave ample supporting-surface for the inking-roller. The rollers 17, 18 are reciprocated in opposite directions by oblique wheels 26, so that the roller being cleaned remains always in about the same position longitudinally. The drying-rollers 31, 32 are mounted in a higher portion of the trough 13, and the scraper blade 32 is preferably slightly twisted and mounted on an oscillating shaft 34, so that it cleans only one portion of the roller 31 at a time.
