Abstract

17,589. Jaubert, G. F. Aug. 6, 1910, [Convention date]. Hydrogen is made by the action of silicon "alloys," for example, ferro- or mangano-silicon, on a solution of potassium br sodium s u l p h a t e containing caustic alkali, having a high boiling-point so that external heating may be omitted. In practice the caustic solution is prepared in a tank a provided with a hand-driven agitator b. The resulting hot solution passes through a pipe c, having a valve d, to the bottom of a gas - generator c, in which it is stirred by a hand - driven agitator with the powdered silicon alloy fed into the generator from a hopper vessel h, i by means of a distributor controlled by a crank j. The hot hydrogen liberated passes through a pipe k, which has a branchpipe v forming an hydraulic seal that constitutes a safety-valve, to a condenser scrubber m where it is dried and cooled and passes away through an exit pipe n. The heated cooling- water from the scrubber m passes through pipes r, t to the tank a and generator c. A U waterpressure gauge x is connected to two points of the exit pipe n, one being situated at a throttled part q of the pipe, to indicate the rate of flow of the gas. The gauge may be arranged to control automatically the supply of silicon alloy. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of a strong solution of caustic alkali without any sulphate; this subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
