17,417. Bhisey, S. A. July 31. [Cognate Application, 5015/12.] Type-casting machines; moulds; nicking and trimming type; galley mechanism.-Relates to machines of the kind described in Specifications 21,971/04 and 11,245/08, in which a whole alphabet or a number of type are cast at each operation. The extraction of the type is effected by withdrawing them longitudinally from the moulds either by means of the tang or breakpiece, in which case permanently closed moulds may be used, or by means of fingers which enter and traverse the opened moulds. Removable nick-forming projections are provided in the closed moulds, or the nicks may be formed subsequently by cutting. Means is provided for firmly closing the separable moulds and for pressing the moulds against the casting-spout. The moulds are mounted on an L-shaped support 12, Fig. 5, carried by a member 6 which slides on guides 2 to carry the moulds to and from the casting-spout 32. The moulds are built up of body-plates and division walls 16, and are closed at the top by a cover-plate 17. Passages are provided in the moulds and mould-support for water circulation. The matrices are mounted in a bar 22 screwed to the back of the mouldsupport. The nicks are formed by a sliding plate 26 which is raised by a cam to permit the type to be extracted. A bar of circular crosssection having a flattened part, or a notched bar sliding longitudinally may be used to form the nicks. The moulds are reciprocated by two pairs of cams on a shaft 1. The cams that press the moulds against the casting-spout act on rollers which are adjustable by means of polygonal eccentrics. The member 42 that forms the tang or break-piece is made hollow for water circulation, and can slide relatively to the moulds, its movement being limited by hooks 44, 45. The break-piece may be formed in several parts by projections on the member 42. After the type are cast, the moulds move away from the casting-spout, and the type, which are retained by the engagement of the break-piece with the member 42, are withdrawn from the moulds. The type are then detached from the break-piece by rocking cranks 47, and are received upon a platform 54, by which they are tilted into channels 55. If the nicks are not formed in the mould, the channels 55 deliver the type into receptacles 68, Fig. 4, mounted on an endless chain 69, by which they are carried past rotary nick-cutters 85. The type are then ejected by pushers on to a receiving-tray 87, which rests on latches 89. When a tray is filled, the latches release the tray, which falls and is replaced by an empty tray from above. The nicks may also be formed by a reciprocating or travelling file to which may be connected a bevelled file surface to abrade the corners of the type and remove the burr. Two or more rows of moulds, preferably staggered, may be used in known manner, the rows of type being united by break-pieces joined at the ends and subsequently broken off by spring - pressed plungers. In the form shown in Fig. 14, in which the moulds open to release the type, the moulds occupy an inclined position for casting, and are then rocked back to the horizontal position. The mould-support 110 is placed at the top and the cover-plate 111 below, the moulds being secured to the support by diagonal screws 115. The matrix-carrier 129 is hinged to the cover-plate and carries a roller 133, which co-operates with the pressure-cam that presses the moulds against the casting-spout. The matrices may be clamped between the division walls of the moulds, and the mould parts may be received in recesses in the mould-support and clamped together by the rotation of an eccentric pin. Type-bar matrices may be secured by wedges in wedge-shaped recesses in the matrixcarrier. When the moulds are retracted, springs separate the cover-plate and matrixcarrier from the moulds, and the type are retained by the break-piece mould 125 as before. Collecting-channels 140 then rise and break off the type, which fall into the channels. Pawls 139 or spring plungers sweep off the break-piece. In another form, the type are extracted by pins which descend into and pass through the moulds, the type heads being lifted to disengage the type from the nicks. The pins that extract the type may be on the matrix-carrier. Provisional Specification 17.417/11 states also that the machine may be used for forming printers' rules, quads, and other furniture by means of a suitable mould. Metal-pots. - The face of the casting-spout 106, Fig. 14, is formed with inclined surfaces against which the moulds are pressed.
