Abstract
16,671. Woosnam, A., [Aktieselskabet Kvaerner Brug]. July 20. Pulping-engines.-In a machine for refining paper pulp of the type having stationary and revolving grinding-stones, the grinding pressure is automatically regulated in accordance with the amount of pulp passing through the outlet of the machine. The outlet 7, which communicates with the space 8 surrounding the stones mounted in a casing 5, has an adjustable weight or spring controlled valve 9 connected by a link 31 and levers 33, 32 with a pressureregulating valve 11 inserted in a fluid-pressure conduit 34, 35 leading to an annular cylinder 12 in the casing 5. A safety-valve 36 is arranged in the conduit 35, and the cylinder 12 has an adjustable outlet opening through which leakage water may continuously escape. The stationary stone 2 is secured in an annular piston 13 arranged in the cylinder 12 so that the position of the stone 2 in relation to the revolving stone 3 is controlled by the fluid pressure in the cylinder 12, which pressure is controlled by the position of the valve 9 in the outlet 7. The position of the stone 2 relative to the stone 3 is adjusted against the fluid pressure in the cylinder 12 by turning a hand-wheel 28 fixed to a nut 17 on a screw 16 projecting from the centre of the cover 15, the boss on the wheel 28 bearing against a sleeve 20 loose on the nut 17 and connected by three sets of links and levers 21, 24, 22 to three guide-rods 25 fixed to the rear of the piston 13 and passing through stuffing-boxes in the rear of the cylinder 12. The levers 22 are pivoted to sleeves 26 adustably fixed on the rods 25 by lock-nuts. If hard particles should get between the grinding-surfaces, the stones can move away, against the fluid pressure in the cylinder 12, through a distance corresponding to the space between the end of the sleeve 20 and a collar 29 on the nut 17. The stones 1, 2 are mounted in removable cast-iron rings 30 fitting into the casing 5 and piston 13.
