Abstract

16,583. Harris, J. July 19. Roasting - furnaces. - In a mechanical oreroasting furnace, one or more chloridizing- hearths are provided below the roasting-hearths, and the roasted ore is extracted from the lower roasting-hearth, mixed with salt, and the mixture of ore and salt is then fed on to the upper chloridizing-hearth. A, B, C represent roasting- hearths and D, E the chloridizing-hearths. Ore is fed to the upper hearth at G, and is moved along by rabbles to the opening G<1>, through which it passes to the hearth B, and in a similar manner to the hearth C. The ore is extracted from the hearth C by a worm or conveyer J and carried to the base of a hopper K, where it is mixed with salt, the salt and ore being fed by the worm L to the upper chloridizing- hearth D. The ore is moved along the chloridizing - hearths in a similar manner to that employed in the roasting portion of the furnace, and is finally extracted at M. Owing to the increased amount of material to be dealt with on the chloridizing-hearths, the rabbles in this portion of the furnace are made of sufficient length to deal with a greater depth of material, or the depth of material may be decreased and the rate of travel increased by employing suitable rabbles. The gases given off during the roasting process pass from hearth to hearth by way of openings N and finally escape by the flue O. The gases given off during the chloridizing process may be separately collected and led off through an opening above the hearth D. To render all parts of the furnace readily accessible, tapered apertures filled by loose blocks P are provided. According to the Provisional Specification, the chloridizing - hearths may be provided with flues beneath in a similar manner to the lowermost hearth described in Specification 23,331/10.
