Gear-cutting; milling-cutters.-Worm gearing of the multiple-threaded quick-pitch type in which each thread of the worm is less than one complete turn in length is constructed with each thread or tooth thinner at the middle of its length and at the ends than in the mean positions. In a machine of the kind described in Specification 13,433/97 as applied to the cutting of a worm, means are provided for producing teeth as described above in a worm or in a tool or hob to be used in the production of the wormwheel. The machine has a rotating cutter-head in which the cutter a, instead of being fixed, is mounted on a slide b capable of movement in a radial direction under the influence of a cam d bearing on a roller e mounted on a sliding part f, bv which the tool slide is operated through the medium of a lever g; the cutter is held up against the cam by springs h. In modifications, the cutter, instead of moving radially, is given a circumferential motion, or is given an angular motion to render the motion of the tool eccentric to the cutter-head.
