[Cognate Application, 26,071/11.] Measuring-tapes. -An ungraduated tape or wire is employed, passing over a measuring- wheel which actuates dials under normally fixed pointers, the pointers being slightly movable by gearing from an adjustable segment geared to the highest dial, in order to correct for wear of the measuring-wheel. The supply-reel 2 has a brake-wheel 29 with spring-pressed block 30 and a rewinding-wheel 15 turned by the usual winding-crank. A flared guide 11 leads the wire to the measuring-wheel 4 against which it is pressed by a wheel 5 held in a spring-pressed fork 6. A grip 21, operated by a lever and push-button 23, holds a wire while the measurement is read off. On rewinding the measuring- wire, the wheel 4 and the dials geared therewith are exactly reset by raising the pressure-wheel 5 out of gear and at the same time bringing a friction wheel 36 with externally-operated milled head into gear with the wheel 4 and setting this manually. The registering-dials are on hollow spindles at 50, 52, the highest being at 38 and gearing with a toothed segment 39 which carries an arc 41 in which slides a block 42 adjustable along the arc by means of a screw 44 and turn-button 46. The block is connected by a link 48 with a segment 49 gearing with the normally-fixed pointer of the lowest dial, and through a second segment 51 with the next dial. By this means, if the block 42 is at the centre of the arc 41, the rocking thereof does not affect the two fixed pointers, but if an adjustment is made to correct for wear of the wheel 4 a slight movement is proportionally given to the pointers of the two lower dials.
