Abstract

14,648. Barker, W. K. June 21. Annealing. - Means for bright - annealing articles of non-ferrous metals comprises a vertical or inclined retort provided at one or both ends with a rotary drum having compartments in which the articles are adapted to be sealed from the air. The articles, which may be contained in perforated metal boxes, are fed from a shoot d<1> into a compartment b of a drum a, whereupon the drum is given a quarter-turn by hand or by mechanical means, thus sealing the contents from the air. Steam or gas is then admitted to the compartment b through a port in the wall of the casing a and a port k to expel the air through the opposite wall, after which the casing is given another quarter-turn and the articles pass into the retort e. At the discharge end, the articles fall into a compartment b<1>. The air in the compartment b<2> having been displaced by steam, the drum is given a quarterturn and water is admitted to cool the articles, the steam formed passing into the retort e through a passage r and escaping through a relief valve s. When the compartment is full of water, it is automatically emptied by a siphon, and on further rotation of the drum, the articles pass out of the apparatus. When a drum is used at one end only of the retort, the other end is sealed by water or other suitable means.
