Abstract

13,791. Lake, W. E., [Goss Printing Press Co.]. June 9. Printing-surfaces.-A machine for trimming curved stereotype plates comprises a trimming- cylinder 26 rotating in bearing-rings 27 in a frame which is pivoted on trunnions 20 so that the cylinder can be tilted to a vertical position to deliver the plate after trimming. The machine is operated from a shaft 9, constantly driven by worm gear 11 from a motor 10. In the lower part of the frame 8 is a cam shaft 47, driven by worm gear 68 from a shaft 67, rotated by a belt 65 from a pulley 13, which is adapted to be clutched to the shaft 9 by the operation of a hand-lever 53. The end 56<a> of the lever 53 normally engages a stop notch in a disk on the shaft 47. The plate 34 is held in the trimming- cylinder by a stationary rib 33, Fig. 6, and a movable rib 35 provided with pins 37 which rest on levers 39, the ends of which, as the cylinder rotates, bear against cam-surfaces 41. After the plate has been placed in position and the lever 53 operated, a cam on the shaft 47 throws a second clutch on the shaft 9 into gear, whereby the cylinder 26 is driven by means of belts 77, 83 and worm-gear 29 to carry the plate past a cutter 42 driven by a belt 80, and a stationary shaving-knife 31. At the completion of half a revolution, the cam disengages the cylinder-rotating gear, while a collar 88 on the rod 87, connected to a pin on a disk 58, engages a crank 85 on the trunnions 20 and turns the cylinder into a vertical position. Sliding in the cylinder 26 are rods 90, which carry at their ends a cross-piece 92 having rollers 94 running in slots 96 in inclined bars 95. The upper ends of the slots 96 are concentric with the trunnions 20, so that as the cylinder commences to turn, the cross-piece 92 remains still; but as the motion continues, slowly descends with the trimmed plate. A bar 97, normally raised by springs 101, eases the descent of the plate. The plate is finally delivered by belts 106 driven intermittently from the shaft 47 by a rack 108, pinion 109, and ratchet 111, operated by a pin on the disk 58. After the delivery of the plate and the return of the cross-piece 92 by the lever 97, the cylinder swings back to the horizontal position by its own weight, and the driving-gear is restarted to rotate the drum to its original position, after which the whole machine comes to rest.
