Abstract

13,018. Meunier, G. May 30. [Addition to 12,207/11.] Glycerine, obtaining and purifying. - Relates to that portion of the parent invention dealing with the treatment of the mixture of distillers' wash or crude glycerine with carbonized cellulose to obtain glycerine and succinic acid or pure glycerine respectively. (1) A mixture of alcohol and benzene, preferably in equal parts, is used as a solvent; the glycerine may be separated from the resulting solution by adding a further quantity of benzene. (2) The residual solvent contained in the residue after the extraction of the glycerine is recovered by washing with a saturated solution of the saline constituents of the wash, or with concentrated wash freed from glycerine, or with petrol. The washing may be effected in the centrifugal apparatus in which the extraction was performed. (3) A continuously-acting plant is provided for effecting the drying of the mixture of wash and cellulose, the extraction of glycerine, and the recovery of the solvent by distillation. It comprises a drier A, an extractor B, and a solvent recuperator C, each provided with screw conveyers. The conveyers of the drier A and the recuperator C are provided with hollow steam-heated shafts, and may themselves be hollow; the conveyer of the extractor B is perforated to allow the solvent to pass through it. An agent, such as the mixture of benzene and alcohol, or benzene alone, is brought into contact with the material in the drier A in order to aid in the disengagement of the moisture at low temperatures. The vapours evolved pass to a rectifying-column a<1> in which the water is separated, the vapours of the added agent being either returned directly to the base of the drier or condensed in a condenser a<2> and returned in the liquid form. The liquid derived from the extractor B passes to a distilling-column b<1>, from which the solvent vapours pass to a condenser b<2> or directly to the extractor B. The recovery of the solvent in the recuperator B is aided by a current of steam or of benzene or other vapours. The vapours are separated from water &c. in a rectifying- column c' and are returned to the system.
