Catch gear and like safety retaining - mechanism.-Lifts or hoists are fitted with a safety brake mechanism adapted to come into operation when the suspending - cable breaks or when the speed is excessive. Spur-wheels e, f mounted on shafts c, d above the cage mesh with racks g, h in the well. The shaft c carries a clutch member normally in engagement with a spur-wheel which through the gearing p, q, r, t drives a wormwheel at the same speed as the shaft d, on which it is loosely mounted. The shaft d also carries a clutch member normally disengaged from the wheel u, hut on an emergency the clutch on shaft c is disconnected, and the clutch on the shaft d is engaged, with the result that the worm-wheel u jams on the worm t and arrests the cage. The clutches are moved by a weighted lever w normally retained by a link 5 resting on a lever 3 coupled to the hoisting-link n. If the cable breaks, the lever 3 is tilted by a spring z, and the clutch is operated by the weighted lever w. If the speed is excessive, a governor 6 raises a ball 10 and allows it to run over a division in the tube 11 and to fall on the dished end of a lever 12, thereby disengaging the link 5.
