Channels in cylinders, piston-rods, connecting- rods, &c.-The connecting-rod or cross-head pin of engines or pumps with vertical pistons is lubricated by oil supplied from above through a fixed pipe f, passing centrally through the cylinder a and through a stuffing- box g in the piston b. The oil drops through the hollow piston-rod c on to the pin d to be lubricated. The oil may also be conveyed to the crank-pin. In a modification, the piston - rod is in the form of a wide tube and contains the bearing for the pin d. The bearing is formed with a cup to catch the oil dripping from the pipe f.
