9140. Biernacki, R. K. April 12. Reservoirs in axleboxes. - Axle-boxes for railway and tramway vehicles are lubricated by oil-saturated waste, which presses against the axle by gravity. The sides a of the axlebox are inclined at c and approach the underside of the journal b, merging in an oil-well d. The waste is packed at the sides of the journal, and as it sinks it comes more closely into contact with the journal. Recesses or ribs are formed in the sides a to prevent the waste from crowding towards one end of the axle-box.
