Abstract
8281. Andersen, O. H. April 5, 1910, [Convention date]. Potato planters; manure and seed. distributors.-A potato-planting machine is provided with removable attachments for drilling root seeds, and with special means for adjusting and supporting the ploughs or furrow openers and the covering-plates, and for delivering the potatoes from the hopper. It may also be provided with apparatus for distributing artificial manure. The ploughs are laterally adjustable on screwed rods 2, 4, Fig. 1, adjustably mounted in hangers 3 and in a lifting-lever 5, which is pivoted on the axle and is provided with a locking quadrant 6. The covering-plates or shovels are carried by bars 7 adjustable laterally on screwed rods 9, 13. The rod 9 is carried by pivoted arms 8 and is connected to a lifting-lever 11, and the rod 13 is adjustably connected to the lever 11 by rods 10. The potatoes flow from the main hoppers 15 to smaller compartments 14 in which is mounted the delivery apparatus shown in Fig. 6. This consists of a circular disk provided with concentric walls or flanges of varying height and with two open-bottomed rectangular chambers 16, towards which the disk slopes. The disk is rocked about its axis 17 so as to bring the chambers 16 alternately over an opening in a fixed bottom plate 25, part 26 of which is hinged and supported by a spring. As the chambers 16 pass over this opening they come under a fixed plate which closes them at the top. In the modification shown in Fig. 8, the rectangular delivery passages or chambers 28 are formed in oppositely-reciprocating ribbed plates and pass alternately outside the bottom edge 29 of the compartment 14. The ribbed plates slope towards the wall 34 which is lower than the other walls of the chambers 28. The fixed bottom plate 31 is provided with a hinged part 32 supported by a spring 33. For drilling root seeds on the flat, the ploughs and cover plates are removed and the drilling attachments fastened to the lever 5 and pivoted arms. 8 by various arrangements of links 36, 37. The covering-plates may be mounted in place of the ploughs to form ridges in front of the drills.
