Abstract

7925. Hiley, A. March 30. Dash-pots. - Consists in preventing breakage of tension or compression members of structures and machinery, due to overloading, by means of a liquid - controlled brake or dashpot used in conjunction with destructible rods or equivalent means, which yield under a predetermined stress and allow the dash-pot to come into operation. Such shock - absorbing apparatus is stated to be applicable to chains, ropes, and rods of lifting and hauling apparatus or of structures such h a s suspension bridges; to appliances used in lifting and hauling such as pulleyblocks, cranes, minecages, lifts, and hooks and to compression members or apparatus such as buffers. Fig. 1 shows one construction of apparatus illustrating the application of the invention to a chain or rope. The chain is connected to eyes or hooks A', E<1> formed on the dash-pot cylinder A and on a cap at the upper end of the piston-rod C respectively. The cap is connected to the cylinder by one or more screwed rods D, which break under a predetermined stress and allow the piston to displace the liquid in the upper portion of the cylinder. During this movement, the liquid is forced through one or more orifices in the piston controlled by tapered keys I, which gradually diminish and finally close these orifices. A spring or pad a<11> cushions the piston at the end of the yielding movement, also a second spring may be provided to react on the piston so that the apparatus may absorb smaller shocks occurring between the breakage of the rods and their renewal. Bolts acting in shear or other equivalent devices may be substituted for the rods D, while the tapered keys I may be replaced by other mechanism producing a steady resistance to the movement of the piston such as the types of mechanism used in gun-recoil cylinders. The invention is also shown applied to a pulleyblock, and to a mine cage.
