Abstract

7409. Gouldbourn, J., Hallam, H., and British United Shoe Machinery Co. March 24. Slugging. - Machines for securing welts, rands, and similar strips to stock in the manufacture of boots and shoes, such as those described in Specifications 20,376/98 and 14,046 / 04, [both in Class 17, Boots &c.], are arranged so that the cutter slits the inner portion of the welt by entering its under surface and proceeding obliquely in such direction that each slit portion, before being secured, overrides the portion immediately in front of it; they are also arranged so that a single manually - operated part controls two or more of the operations of raising the work - support, starting the machine, and throwing the slitting-mechanism into operation. The welt y, Fig. 2, is guided on to the work x carried by a rotary table B by an inclined guideway C, and is acted upon by a knife C<1> located in a slideway below the welt. In the machine shown, the three operations referred to above are controlled from a treadle E, Fig. 1, which can be depressed in three successive steps. The front of the treadle is connected by a rod F to a bell-crank G, G<2>, which is formed with a cam-surface G<3> adapted to be moved to raise the table B &c. The rear end of the treadle is connected by a two-part rod H to the starting- clutch mechanism ; both the work-support and clutch connexions include lost-motion devices. The connexions to the slitting-mechanism comprise an arm J, Figs. 1 and 2, mounted on the pivot G<1> of the bell-crank G, G<2>, a rod J', and a second bell-crank J<2>, J<3>, having engagement through a pin J<4> with the slotted end J<6> of a pendulum link J<5>, which is hinged at its upper end to the oscillating carrier of the knife that severs the fasteners from the fastener-strip. This link normally rides freely through a slot C<8> in an arm C<7> projecting from the spring- pressed lever C<2> that actuates the welt-slitting knife, but, when the treadle E is depressed into its third position, the link J<5> is swung into a position in which a projection J<7> from it engages a projecting part C<9> of the slot C<8>; this causes the knife to be moved forwards at each depression of the link J<5>.
