Screw propellers. - Propellers, designed more particularly for aerial use, are constructed so that at each section the tangent at the leading edge is practically the helical tangent, and the tangent to the trailing edge makes a constant angle with a plane containing the axis of the propeller. Considering a section at E', Fig. 4, the tangent at the leading edge at A<7>, Fig. 3, passes through the pitch point P, and the tangent at D<7> makes an angle of 60 degrees with O P, the working face being an arc of a circle. To determine the other face, the centre thickness G', H', equal to J<7>, K<7>, is obtained from a thickness diagram, Fig. 5, an arc being drawn through the points D<7>, H<7>, A<7>. The arcs of the two faces may be made eccentric, so that the leading edge is thin. In a thin blade, the median line of the section, instead of the face line, may be made to follow the conditions of tangency, upon which a thin section is built up.
