Abstract

6522. Robertson, P. L. March 15. Turning wood-screws. -In a wood-screw machine in which the head is shaved, simultaneously with the threading of the shank, by a tool mounted in the chuck, the head-shaving tool is moved axially and transversely into engagement with the head. The shaving-tool 135, Figs. 8 and 12, is in the form of a flat bar slidable in a groove in a rod 139 extending through the chuck spindle, and is actuated by a cam-operated lever engaging between lugs 143, the fulcrum of the lever being adjustable. The transverse movement of the tool is obtained by a cam 163 on a collar 160, adjustably connected to the rod 139 by a screwed rod 166. Lubricant is supplied to the head-shaving tool by a tube passing axially through the rod. The threading- tool 200, Fig. 19, is traversed by a cam 250 secured to a slide block 253 which engages a resilient strap 255 connected to an arm 256 on the rocking shaft 202 which carries the threading-tool, this connexion allowing the tool to be swung outwards on the completion of the threading operation. The back-rest 127<1>, Fig. 7, is carried by a lever 127 and is moved into engagement with the blank against spring return by an arm 128 which carries a wedge-adjusted finger 128<1> and is connected to cam-operated goose-neck lever 132. The blank feeding; chucking and headstock-driving means; and the means for adjusting the threading-tool are described in Specifications 19,574/11, 19,575/11, and 440/12.
