Abstract

5703. Lake, H. W., [Greenstreet Folding Box Machine Co.]. March 7. Stapling. - A boxblank stapling-machine is provided with means for automatically spacing successive cleats. The cleats, which are carried up to feed-wheels 67, Fig. 1, by constantlymoving feed-chains 38, are provided at their ends with mating portions, and the inner side 47, Fig. 4, of the end of each cleat is cut away. The wheels 67 are frictionally driven, and can stop when the cleats are held against forward movement. The cleats move forward until a spring-pressed finger 41 passes into the cut-away portion of a cleat and projects into the path of the following ones, thus stopping their movement. A friction-driven spacing-wheel 51, Fig. 12, on a shaft 53 is then able to bring one of its spacing-fingers 52 in the path of the cleat, which is freed by a cam 58 on the wheel 51 moving back the finger 41. The cleat is rapidly moved forward until it is separated from the preceding one by the spacing- finger 52. When this occurs, the forward end of the cleat enters between friction rollers 26, Fig. 1, and a positively-driven feeding-chain 24 by which it is carried under the stapling-mechanism. A spring-pressed sheet gauge 83 is at the same time moved sideways in front of the cleat, the gauge being carried by links on a sliding carriage 81. After the sheet has been secured to the cleat by one or more staples, a finger 86 on the carriage engages a cam 87 and retracts the gauge 83. The carriage is then drawn back bv a weight into position for the next cleat. The operations are repeated for the following cleats; but after the fourth cleat has passed, the spacing-wheel 51 interposes a long spacing-member 57 to provide an extra length of wire between two successive box blanks. The friction wheels 26 may be moved sideways to remove cleats that have been wrongly fed, by moving a hand-lever 28. In a modification, the cleats and sheets are spaced by the same means. The cleats 181, Fig. 15, are stopped by a finger 131 until a spacing-finger 144, with an upper projection for the sheets, is moved into position. The finger 131 is then retracted and the cleat and sheet moved forward under the stapling - devices, carrying the spacing - finger with them. A stop 148 throws out the spacing- finger after the first staples have been driven. To allow for the extra spacing between the completed blanks, stops operated by a knee-lever are moved to hold the spacing-fingers against forward movement. The mechanism operating the stops is also connected to the stapling-devices so that, when the stops are thrown into operation, the feed of wire for the staple is stopped.
