Abstract
4680. Schwarz, P. Feb. 24. Ammonia, distilling ; column-stills. -The ammoniacal liquors pass down a column still 13, Fig. 1, into a liming-chamber 1. The ammonia vapours are passed through a layer of flint stones 23 to separate water. The liming-chamber is divided by partitions 2 into compartments 3, 3<Î>, Fig. 3, through which the liquor flows in the direction shown by the arrows. The liquor which flows from the still by a pipe 20 is mixed with lime - water from a pipe 9, and is treated in the compartments 3 with steam mixed with air from the perforated pipes 4, and in the compartment 3<Î> with steam from the pipes 7. Each tray of the still has openings 16, Fig. 4, for passage of the vapours, covered by hoods 17. The inlet 14 for the liquor and the outlet 15 are placed in opposite diagonal corners, and partitions 18 are arranged to cause the liquor to take a long course as indicated by the arrows. Each tray is provided with a sludge valve 25, Fig. 1, communicating by pipe 26 with a cock 27, to allow the sludge to be passed into the liming-chamber.
