Abstract

4391. Scott, A. P. Feb. 21. Reels, rod.-A reel is mounted on ball bearings in such a way that it can be readily slipped off the spindle. The reel hub b has a lining b<1> containing a ball-race groove c, into which project balls d. These balls pass through apertures in the hollow bearing f and abut against the surface of a cone e, the base of which is in contact with a spring h, while the vertex is prolonged to form a spindle e<1> projecting beyond the side of the reel. The spring h is carried in a bearing i screwed into the bearing f, so that by pressing the end of the spindle e<1>, the balls d are allowed to drop out of the groove c and the reel a can then be readily removed. The balls may be replaced by rollers, and for large reels the balls and cones may be duplicated. A method of actuating the ratchet check is also described, in which the pawl n is adapted to be moved from the operative to the inoperative position by means of a shoulder q on the cam p. The spring p<2> works in a slot p<1> and causes the pawl n to be locked when in the inoperative position.
