Crucible furnaces.-In a gas-fired furnace for heating metals and other substances in crucibles and like receptacles, a grid c is provided for the support of the crucible d or the block e on which the crucible is mounted, and an opening f is provided beneath the grid for the escape of the contents of the crucible in the event of the crucible breaking. The opening f is fitted with a counterweighted valve g, which, when depressed, allows for the passage of material to the pan h below. Before escaping to the atmosphere, the hot gases pass from the crucible chamber to one or more passages i which are adapted at one part to form a chamber j for preliminarily heating ingots such as l. The gases escape from the furnace by way of an outlet o. The cover b is mounted on a vertical spindle m and is adapted to be raised and lowered and swung in an horizontal plane by means of a lever n.
