Abstract

2595. Daw, A. W., and Daw, Z. W. Feb. 1. Percussive drills; percussive hand tools.- Relates to percussive tools of the type in which a compressed-air cushion is provided to take up the shock of the hammer on the anvil, and also to debris-removing means for hammer rock drills. The tool-chuck 1 has a piston 2 working in a cylinder 13 to which air is fed either directly from the main or from the rear or front end of the main cylinder through a passage 5. A non-return valve 7 is provided in the air passage. The rear end of the cylinder 13 is constantly exhausted through a port 30 and the tool. For removing debris, during one stroke of the main piston sufficient water to lay the dust only is admitted through an inlet 9 and ring 12 to the chuck 1, and during the next stroke air passes from the main cylinder, through a passage having a non-return valve, to the ring 12 and chuck 1, forces the water through the tool into the bore-hole, and ejects therefrom the moistened debris. The inlet 9 is preferably small, to limit the supply, and opens to a larger hole 19, which forms a seal preventing air from reaching the water main; a non- return valve may also be provided.
