Alizarin is obtained by heating with alkali solutions of less than 50 per cent strength a mixture of anthraquinone and an anthraquinone sulphonic acid or a sulphite, with or without oxidizing - agents. According to examples, anthraquinone, anthraquinone-#-sulphonic acid, caustic soda lye, and sodium nitrate, or anthraquinone, sodium sulphite, caustic soda lye, and sodium nitrate, are used.
