Abstract

616. Schmidt, F. W. Jan. 10. Thermal switches; cases.-A thermal switch, of the kind described in Specification 22,888/10 for immersion in a liquid in a storage battery to control its charging, has a casing which is only partly electrically conductive. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, a bimetallic strip 3 is carried by a plate 1 of brass or other metal enclosed in a casing 8, of glass, porcelain, or hard rubber, contact plugs 12 of lead or silver being fixed in the casing so as to engage with the plate 1 to form one terminal. The strip may touch an insulated contact-screw 6, which is connected with a screwed terminal 19 having a flange 20 and an insulating binding-nut 22. A ribbed shield 24 with washers of rubber and mica is placed between the flange and a ribbed neck on the cover. The terminal is insulated by a mica sleeve and held in place by a nut 32 and washers. The cover is cemented on to the casing, and has an opening closed by a plug 14 for allowing adjustment of the contact-screw. The casing is filled with an insulating and heatconducting liquid such as oil or hydrocarbon. In another construction, the casing is of electrically conducting material covered with a layer of porcelain, enamel, or lacquer, or the cover only is coated in this way, and the sides and bottom are plated with an acid - resisting material, a plate of non-conducting material being secured to the bottom. Otherwise, the layer of porcelain or other material is formed with openings through which contact is made with the casing, and the contact plugs are dispensed with.
