Abstract
176. British Thomson - Houston Co., [General Electric Co.]. Jan. 3. Plastic compositions containing india-rubber, fibres, &c.-An insulating-composition comprises a vulcanized mixture of reclaimed rubber, inert material, and a drying - oil. Two hundred pounds of reclaimed rubber are mixed with an equal quantity of linseed oil, and heated with as little oxidation as possible to between 540-575‹ F., whereupon reaction occurs causing heating and frothing. After the temperature has fallen, naphtha may be added to the mixture to bring it to a suitable consistency, and inert material and sulphur added. A suitable mixture comprises seventy pounds of short asbestos, ten pounds of talc, and four pounds of sulphur added to thirty or thirty-two pounds of the mixture described above. The compound is moulded in an hydraulic press and vulcanized.
