Cards and the like, punching. - Relates to arrangements for producing pattern cards for embroidery machines, wherein the cards for only one-half of a symmetrical pattern are directly produced on the reading and stamping machine, the card for the other half of the pattern being obtained from this card. A series of bent fingers c, Figs. 1 and 5, of a frame are arranged in staggered order in series in bars a, b, so that bars c which fit through series I of the holes in the bar a fit through series III of the holes in the bar b, and bars which fit in series II of holes in the bar a fit in series IV of holes in the bar b. The cards are such that the stitch produced in the embroidery machine by perforations in the left half of the card, corresponding to series I and II of the holes in the bars a, b, travels in the direction from lefthand below to right - hand above, or from right - hand above to left-hand below according to whether the direction hole (the first in each series) is punched or not. On the other hand, the stitch produced by perforations in the right-hand half of the card, corresponding to series III and IV of the holes in the bars, travels from righthand below to left-hand above, or from left-hand above to right-hand below. The card for the first half of the pattern may be placed in a repeating-machine, fingers of which then operate the fingers c ; or the punched cards may be placed in front of the fingers c, and other fingers corresponding in number to the fingers c be caused to press on the cards, so as to pass through holes therein and act on the fingers c, which are caused to punch a second card. Where the originallypunched card is perforated on the left-hand half (i.e. in series I and II), the fingers c cause the second card produced therefrom to be punched on the right-hand half (i.e. in series III and IV and vice versa), so that when placed in the embroidery machine, the second card causes a stitch of exactly the opposite slope to that produced in the embroidery machine by the corresponding part of the first card, and the whole of this second card will produce a pattern that is the reverse of that produced by the first card. The two cards thus together produce a complete symmetrical pattern.
